Gemstone Certification

Gemstones come in a bewildering variety of colors, shapes and sizes. All stones (including diamond) are "colored stones".

Investment gemstones are the same kinds of gems that you would find in jewelry stores, only much higher (generally) in quality and more carefully selected. Judgment is involved and considerable expertise is demanded in this selection.

Since quality in a gemstone is largely a matter of opinion, a gemstone buyer should have qualified opinions from at least one gemologist in addition to the seller. The credentials of the appraiser must be indisputably excellent.

Gemstone evaluating and appraising is an art that requires many years of experience to master. A gemological diploma (FGA or GG) is essential, but reputation and business credentials are also important.

A good gemstone certificate must include information about the shape, weight and physical dimensions of a stone, as well as detailed analyses of color, tone, clarity and cutting quality. A color photo of the gemstone is also very helpful.
